Since her 2014 marriage to George Clooney, Amal Clooney has become a fashion fixture at red carpet events alongside her husband. The British-Lebanese human rights attorney’s style, while contemporary in many ways, also includes looks that draw on Old Hollywood glamour, and her Venice Film Festival wardrobe has repeatedly returned to vintage silhouettes and decades past.
Atelier Versace and Jean-Louis Scherrer have been designers Clooney has incorporated into her Venice Film Festival attire, with nods to the ’90s and classic Hollywood. Before the 2026 edition of the Venice Film Festival kicks off on Sept. 2, during which her husband will be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, WWD looks back at Clooney’s red carpet style through the years.

2025

At the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Amal Clooney harkened back to the ’90s in a vintage 1995 fuchsia high-low gown by Jean-Louis Scherrer. The strapless, maximalist dress boasted bold color, ruching and a minidress hem with a voluminous skirt at the back for a high-low effect.
Buttons running down the front placket of the dress added further intrigue to the vintage look. Clooney’s choice arrived amid celebrities’ continued return to ’90s and early aughts runways for their red carpet and promotional tour dressing. Clooney completed her look with Aquazzura strappy sandal heels and a Jimmy Choo clutch.
2024

In 2024, Clooney embraced the butter-yellow trend in a gown by Atelier Versace. The tulle and lace gown was crafted with a plunging neckline and thin straps, along with a fitted bodice and tiered, flouncy fabric. A train trailed Clooney on the red carpet for “Wolfs” premiere.
2017

For the 2017 Venice Film Festival, Clooney wore a custom-made lilac and pink ombré silk chiffon dress by Atelier Versace. Featuring a bevy of Old Hollywood design touches, the dress included thin straps and a fitted bodice with fabric emphasizing the bustline.
A cinched waist gave the gown definition, while the flowing chiffon skirt continued the gradient in pink and lilac. Clooney’s glam extended the Old Hollywood references with her coiffed hair — featuring a side part and volume with a length that just grazed her shoulders.
