Macon, Ga. (WGXA) — Some folks might call Atlanta the “Hollywood of the South,” but Hollywood’s connection to the heart of Georgia is continuing to grow.

WGXA previously reported on Judd Apatow’s latest movie, “The Comeback King” filming in Macon starring Glen Powell.

But when the cameras leave town, what’s left behind?

Macon’s Rock Candy Tours is seeking to answer that question on their “Film Macon” tour.

For an hour, you’ll get a van ride across Macon – getting a behind the scenes look at the movies that have used the city as a backdrop.

From Historic Luther Williams Field to the Capitol Theater, Alice Borrelli says Macon is an outlier.

“Honestly, every corner I look at… I’m like, that’s a film right there,” she explained. “It’s very versatile, for sure. And it helps that we have that we have no less than 6,000 buildings on the historic register.”

Borrelli is a former editor and producer who made the move from New York and is a guide on several of their tours.

After years working in the industry herself, she now helps visitors see Macon through a filmmaker’s eyes.

“We’re a city that likes to say yes,” she said.

You’ll find out many insider secrets – like why a house on Orange Street grew palm trees, or how a film crew turned an old Heinz plant on Roff Ave. into 1930s Pittsburgh.

Over the years, Macon’s been Anytown, USA – standing in for Michigan, Oklahoma, and Florida.

Aaron Buzza with Visit Macon and Film Macon said the city’s ability to blend in has helped set the table for the future.

“We’re seeing repeat business if they have a good experience,” Buzza said. “And (crews) are seeing a lot of things while they’re here that they’re not using on the film that they’re shooting, but it gives them inspiration for the next film down the road.”

The next time you watch a movie or stream a new series, there’s a good chance part of Macon will be hiding in plain sight.

Rock Candy offers the “Film Macon” tours twice a month. The next one is in two weeks on June 22nd.

You can also check Visit Macon’s website to see their full lineup – including a ghost tour right here in town!
