Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first look at M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks‘ collaboration, Remain.

In the trailer, released Tuesday, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project. While there, “he encounters an alluring young woman (Phoebe Dynevor) who pulls him out of his shell, and into the center of a deadly mystery that hangs over the town.“

“You‘re not like anybody i‘ve ever met,” Gyllenhaal‘s Tate tells Dynevor‘s Wren in the trailer as the two are shown having fun while playing board games and falling in love in the home Gyllenhaal‘s Tate is staying in.

“Why can‘t we be together, Tate?” Dynevor‘s Wren asks before the trailer cuts to a darker secret reality the potential couple face.

“Trust the unknown,” the trailer teases.

Shyamalan directs from his own screenplay, with the story a collaboration between Shyamalan and Sparks. The film is produced by Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, with Sparks executive producing.

“Long time ago, when we had the original script of The Notebook that was written by Jan Sardi, the studio and I decided, ‘Hey, we’re going to get another writer, and we’re going to start from scratch. He’s going to revise it to the way we want it.’ One of the writers we went to was a young, largely unknown screenwriter. His name was M. Night Shyamalan,” Sparks told The Hollywood Reporter.

However, years later Sparks and Shyamalan met again with the hopes of joining forces on a project. When the author known for delivering epic love stories and the filmmaker always up for a twist teamed up, they came up with a story that both were interested in telling in their respective mediums. That original story ended up becoming Remain, also released as a novel last October.

Sparks praised Gyllenhaal and Dynevor for their take on the upcoming love story.

“When you start going through people who’ve been in my films, I’ve covered a lot of the big [names] … Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron … We’re running out of big name stars here especially for certain age groups. (Laughs.) Jake was great! It was really magical the way that came on board,“ Sparks told THR. ” When it came to Phoebe, Phoebe was one of three we were debating. She was terrific. They’re both amazing performers and they both did great, great work.“

Remain will release in theaters on Valentine‘s Day 2027. Watch the trailer below.
