James Gunn kickstarted DCU on the big screen with last year’s Superman which became a big critical and commercial hit, earning $618.70 million on a $225 million budget.

Superman is followed by the next big screen outing – Supergirl and unfortunately, the response from the critics as well as the audience has been unfavourable.

Supergirl is a Major Box Office Bomb Suffering $100 Million Loss

Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa starrer Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie of Cruella, Million Dollar Arm and I, Tonya.

The movie opened poor at just $37.10 million at the US box office in its opening weekend, and the worldwide 3-day biz was also below expectations, i.e. $62.60 million.

Supergirl was made on a budget of $170 million. Additionally, DC Studios spent $120 million on its marketing.

Which means the movie is going to end up with a massive $100 million to $120 million loss for DC Studios/Warner Bros, as per Variety.

Another source puts the loss amount to $80-85 million. In any case, it has turned out to be a big box office bomb.

As per the publication, the movie needs to make $300 million worldwide to break even at the box office and looking at its below expectations global weekend, Supergirl is failing to reach the number.

It is expected to fold at $100 million domestic lifetime biz and around $200-210 million final global haul.

One of the reasons behind Supergirl failing to attract the audiences to the theatres could be the not so good brand value of the titular superhero.

Supergirl Scores One Of Weakest Openings For Superhero Movies

Supergirl has opened below The Marvels, Morbius and Joker 2. Check it out below:

• The Marvels – $46.1M (Disney)

• Morbius – $39M (Sony)

• Joker 2 – $37.7M (WB)

• Supergirl – $37.1M (WB)

Why Supergirl Bombed?

One of the reasons why Supergirl failed to attract the audience to theatres could also be due to its poor release window.

Releasing a movie with low brand value like Supergirl during peak summer blockbuster season is suicidal.

Supergirl will soon be facing big competition from Minions & Monsters, Moana, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starting next weekend and till July end.

Talking about the same, trade analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told the website, “This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. becauseSupergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster.”

He added, “Audience perception of Supergirl was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”

Having said that, the movie didn’t receive good reviews either.
