‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Wicked’ were huge hits, and got director Jon M. Chu a lot of critical acclaim and praise. However, there was one time in his life when he doubted himself to the point where he did not think he was ever going to make it. In one of his recent interviews, the award-winning director opened up about how much self-doubt he once had before his films became box office successes.

Jon M. Chu opens up about doubting himself as a filmmaker

The famed director, while talking to the audience at Canva Create 2026’s Building Worlds: From Script to Spectacle earlier last month, opened up about how his career has been so far. PEOPLE reported that at the event, he opened up about how, although he has garnered a lot of praise right now, at one point in his life, he doubted himself to the point where he did not feel he would make it.Talking about the same, he added, “When you said my list of movies, it lit up, and you said Crazy Rich Asians. That was a big point in my life. I didn’t think I deserved to be in Hollywood. I was discovered and I got very lucky. And when you win the lottery, you think you actually don’t know how you got there. So you actually can’t win the lottery again.”He further added that he had a great team to back him up on his projects and work, revealing that they stood by his side for a very long time. Adding more context, he shared that “I was like, ‘No one’s going to see this movie.’ I actually told my team, I was like, ‘I’m going to make a movie. I’m going to take five years, and I’m not going to make you any money.’ Luckily, they were fine with it.”

How the creative process works for Jon M. Chu

Furthermore, during the panel, he also opened up about how he goes about with his creative process and how imagination takes the front wheel on most occasions. “It either sparks me or not, or I have to go on some journey to find if I connect with it. Other times I’m like, ‘I have to tell this story,’” he added. Without his set process, the ‘Wicked’ director said that he does not have a base for his story and that he cannot tell anyone about how things are going to go.
