In the realm of Japanese lounges, Katana has remained consistent for the better part of two decades by capitalizing on the robata trend of the aughts and, eventually, Nobu-style sushi and sashimi. In its earlier era, Katana became a paparazzi-swarmed celebrity hangout, though it’s since calmed. Now the dark, semi-industrial interior gives way to a see-and-be-seen patio overlooking Sunset Boulevard. It’s not quite the chic Nobu experience or party-like Koi situation down the block, but Katana’s food remains arguably better than most restaurants competing in the genre. Just expect to shell out, as to be expected from a high-end dinner destination in West Hollywood.

Cocktails are surprisingly stiff and well crafted despite using name-brand spirits. The Heat of the Dragon was a favorite for a kumquat-tinted take on a margarita, while the Sunshine Spritz, made with Red Bull watermelon, lychee, and Giffard’s pamplemousse, makes an easy sipper.

Katana’s tasting menus are a good way to sample the menu without breaking the bank. The lower $85-per-person tasting includes eight savory courses, including sushi and the White Lotus roll, plus seabass and aged ribeye robata skewers. The premium $125-per-person menu ups the luxury with Kobe beef and toro nigiri.
