According to Variety, the Labor Day Box Office is spending another weekend under Spider-Man’s control, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day exactly where it has been for more than a month: at No. 1.
The Marvel and Sony blockbuster is heading toward a sixth straight weekend on top of the domestic box office, while The Odyssey and Coyote vs. Acme are hanging around just behind it.
But Spider-Man’s weekend is about more than another first-place finish.
The movie has now crossed $900 million domestically, and the all-time North American box office record is suddenly very close.
1. Labor Day Box Office: Spider-Man: Brand New Day passes $900 million
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $3.9 million on Friday, enough to push its domestic total beyond $900 million.
It got there in 36 days.
That makes Brand New Day the fastest movie ever to reach $900 million at the domestic box office. Star Wars: The Force Awakens held the previous record after reaching the mark in 50 days.
Spider-Man isn’t stopping there.
The movie is projected to make approximately $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, which would put its domestic total around $922 million by Monday.
That’s only about $14 million behind The Force Awakens and its $936 million domestic record.
At this point, the question isn’t whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day had a huge summer.
It’s whether it’s about to finish with the biggest domestic box office total ever.
2. The Odyssey is still near the top
The Odyssey earned another $3 million Friday and remains in second place heading into the rest of the holiday weekend.
The Universal movie is projected to collect approximately $16.4 million through Monday.
If that number holds, The Odyssey will reach roughly $588 million domestically.
That’s quite a number for a movie that has been in theaters since July and is still finishing ahead of most of the newer releases arriving around it.
3. Coyote vs. Acme keeps going in weekend two
Coyote vs. Acme isn’t disappearing after its opening weekend either.
The Looney Tunes comedy earned $2.6 million Friday and is projected to bring in approximately $15.3 million over the four-day weekend.
That would give the movie about $37.8 million domestically.
It’s still early enough that the next couple of weekends will tell us a lot more, but for now Wile E. Coyote is holding up pretty well against two of the summer’s biggest movies.
4. By Any Means has the best new opening
By Any Means is leading the weekend’s major new releases.
The Paramount thriller earned $2.7 million Friday and is projected to finish the Labor Day weekend with approximately $8.5 million.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg star in the movie, which follows a young FBI agent who recruits a mafia hitman while investigating the murders of civil rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi.
Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton and LaChanze are also part of the cast, with Elegance Bratton directing.
5. Labor Day Box Office: The Dog Stars drops in weekend two
Things aren’t getting much easier for The Dog Stars.
The 20th Century dystopian drama earned $720,000 Friday and is projected to make approximately $3.7 million over its second weekend.
That comes after an $8 million opening weekend.
Onslaught is also struggling in its debut. The Adria Arjona-led action movie earned $770,000 Friday and is projected to finish the holiday weekend with approximately $2.3 million.
For now, though, everything still comes back to Spider-Man.
A sixth weekend at No. 1 would already be a huge run. Crossing $900 million in 36 days makes it historic.
And if Spider-Man: Brand New Day keeps going at anything close to this pace, Star Wars: The Force Awakens may not be holding that domestic record much longer.
The Labor Day Box Office numbers will become clearer as the holiday weekend continues.
