The series will include screenings of ‘L.A. Confidential,’ ‘9 to 5,’ ‘North by Northwest’ and a ‘Mary Poppins’ sing-a-long in June at the Los Angeles and Million Dollar Theatres
Los Angeles Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and celebrating L.A.’s historic and cultural landmarks, is hosting its annual film screening series, Last Remaining Seats, throughout June, celebrating classic Hollywood movies and theaters.
The Last Remaining Seats program began in 1987 and aims to appreciate the historic theaters in Downtown L.A. that are often unused.
On Saturday, the Los Angeles Theatre will be hosting a Mary Poppins sing-along at 1 p.m. and an L.A. Confidential screening at 7 p.m. On June 20, the Million Dollar Theatre will screen 9 to 5 at 1 p.m. and Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest at 7 p.m.
As soon as the lights dim, the movie magic begins with restored Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons from the creator of Betty Boop, Max Fleischer. Before 9 to 5, A SONG A DAY, a cartoon from 1936, will play, a musical featuring Boop herself. Before North by Northwest, Popeye will make an appearance in the slapstick cartoon THE PANELESS WINDOW WASHER from 1937.
Moviegoers are encouraged to dress for the occasion on the theme for each movie. L.A. Conservancy has also partnered with Merch Motel to create a limited-edition merchandise collection available for purchase. A question-and-answer session about the history of the historic theaters will follow each screening.
Tickets are available here for around the same price as a regular movie theater ticket: $20 for L.A. Conservancy members, $25 for the general public and $10 for youth 17 and under.
L.A. Conservancy is also running a nearly three-hour-long walking tour of the historic theater district called “Curtains Up on Broadway.” According to L.A. Conservancy, L.A.’s Broadway was the “original epicenter for film premieres,” and it still boasts “the country’s largest collection of intact historic movie palaces.”
“These historic theatres are integral to the changing identity of Downtown Los Angeles, and a touchstone for generations of Angelenos who trace their roots to this neighborhood,” L.A. Conservancy said in the description of the tour.
