SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Lebanon, Missouri native will have his short documentary showcased at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Dusty Dale Barker is the writer, producer, and director of the film “Marigold,” a 6-minute, 14-second documentary about family and history. It premieres at the Chinese Theatre on Tuesday, June 23, as a part of the Dances With Films L.A. Festival.
“It’s about legacy and memory, and what happens to stories and memories of the people we care about whenever they pass on,” said Barker.
Barker says a few years ago, he found a reel of Kodak 8mm film in an old box of his grandfather’s things. After digitizing the footage, it ended up being about 4 minutes of color footage that was shot in 1959 at his family farm near Bennett Spring State Park.

The footage showed his grandparents fishing and other family members spending time out on the porch of an old farmhouse built in the early 1800s.
Inspired, Barker wrote a short essay poem about what we lose when we don’t ask questions, and that would eventually turn into “Marigold,” named after his family’s farm road in the Ozarks.
The film first premiered at the Dances With Films New York festival in January.
Barker says he intends to show the film in Lebanon.
