Lucky’s, the swanky steakhouse with locations in Montecito and Malibu beloved by A-Listers and their entourages, now has a third outpost in the Arts District. Unfortunately, it’s easily the most underwhelming of the trio. Dinner at the other locations entails polished service and the thrill of wondering which celeb you might see sipping a martini in the corner, but at the moment, you won’t find much of that here. The dining room’s huge mural backdrop makes it feel like you’re eating fried calamari on a soundstage, the crowd skews less Hollywood and more Deloitte, and the service is still finding its footing (our server tended to disappear throughout the meal). That said, the food—like the signature jumbo shrimp cocktail and buttery strip steak in cognac peppercorn sauce—still holds up its end of the bargain. If you’re looking for a steakhouse dinner near Downtown with more charm than a corporate chain, Lucky’s is likely your best choice. We’ll be back to check in soon once this place settles in.
