(London, England) – Mick Jagger says concert crowds are looking for music and escape, not political lectures from the stage.

The Rolling Stones frontman was asked about politics during concerts and made clear he believes performers should be careful about talking down to an audience that paid to hear songs. His message was blunt: fans do not come to a show to be lectured.

The comments land at a time when entertainers are often pressured to take sides on elections, culture fights and foreign policy. Jagger’s view reflects the opposite instinct, that a live show should give people a break from the arguments surrounding them.

For a band that has spent decades playing to politically mixed crowds around the world, the point is also practical. The music can unite a room in a way politics often cannot.
