According to Variety, Mortal Kombat II delivered a strong start at the Friday box office and appears headed for a bigger opening weekend than many expected.

Mortal Kombat II pulled in an estimated $17 million on Friday alone from North American theaters. The early projections were not quite this optimistic, but audiences showed up stronger than expected and kept showing up as the weekend rolled on. At this point the film is one of the biggest conversations happening around the current box office.

Much of the excitement fueling Mortal Kombat II‘s opening weekend traces back directly to Karl Urban stepping into the role of Johnny Cage, a character the franchise’s longtime fans have been waiting to see back on screen for a very long time.

Returning cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, and Josh Lawson. Director Simon McQuoid also returned to helm the sequel following the 2021 reboot.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ Fighting For The No. 1 Spot This Weekend

New releases showed up to challenge it, but Mortal Kombat II holding its ground and fighting for the top position was still the story everyone was watching as the weekend played out.

Strong audience turnout and fan interest in the video game adaptation appear to be helping the sequel outperform earlier projections. The addition of Johnny Cage and the franchise’s expanding scale have also fueled online conversation around the film.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Continues A Strong Weekend Box Office Fight

While it slipped to second place, The Devil Wears Prada 2 continues fighting for strong weekend box office numbers.

The sequel remains one of the season’s strongest crowd-pleasers and continues drawing audiences during its second weekend on the big screen.

‘Michael’ Continues Fighting For Audience Attention

In third place, Michael once again showed solid staying power at the box office.

Interest in the film remains high as audiences continue turning out to see the story centered around Michael Jackson’s life and music career.

Music fans also turned out for Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), which opened in theaters nationwide this weekend.

Family audiences had another new option with Sheep Detectives, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Bryan Cranston, Bella Ramsey, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The mystery comedy follows a group of sheep attempting to solve the murder of their shepherd after his sudden death shocks their quiet community.

We will have final box office numbers tomorrow.
