[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts 2026 Hollywood Fringe Festival review of Eric Daniel Weiner’s solo show My Life Is a Sonnet, a charming, funny and deeply heartfelt solo show about love, regret and the hope that it is never too late for either.
Comedic, poignant, and heartwarming, My Life Is a Sonnet proves the saying, “Tragedy plus time equals comedy.”
The 2026 Hollywood Fringe Festival is upon us once again. A gathering of varied and talented artists at various theatres around the Hollywood area where brilliance meets opportunity. In my case, the first show of my season began with the hilarious and touching solo show, My Life Is a Sonnet. This highly enjoyable show is written and performed by Eric Daniel Weiner.
The stage was bare save for three-fold-up chairs and a music stand. Enter Charlie Katz, a man who claims not to have the emotion of anger, but has enough hopeful romanticism to fill a stadium. His story of true love begins at a prep school in a class dedicated to William Shakespeare’s sonnets.
As explained by Charlie Katz, his story of true love is structured like a Shakespearean sonnet, which features a 14-line poem, three four-line stanzas (quatrains) that build an idea, followed by a concluding two-line stanza (couplet) that delivers a resolution.
We are taken on the journey of Katz’s life, which visits such issues as unhappiness, sadness, and untapped rage. My Life Is a Sonnet is not only an entertaining ride, but Eric Daniel Weiner is a gifted storyteller and keeps the audience completely captive.
There is a gentle charm and sharp wit about him, most touching when he stops to reflect and shares with descriptions that are so vivid, you are transported to his world.
I am a big fan of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, and I look forward to it every year. Honestly, it’s shows like My Life is a Sonnet that would not necessarily be produced at any other time that keeps me and thousands of other fringe lovers coming back year after year.
This show is an absolute gem, and it needs to be seen! Eric Daniel Weiner’s performance as our hapless hero, Charlie Katz, is nuanced and sweetly delivered with humour and a good deal of gravitas.
The show begs the question, “Is it ever too late for love?” Charlie’s journey from prep school, where he always felt he missed his opportunity for true love, to years later, when he has a renewed hope for that love that he felt was gone forever, is the real purpose of the show. You’ll have to see the show for yourself to find out what happens to our hero in the end (no spoilers).
If you find yourself in Hollywood in June and you need something to do or you are just a romantic looking for love, do yourself a favour and see this show. It will do you and maybe someone else’s heart some good. Bravo!
