The Broadway production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow is being filmed this week.

The producers of the Broadway show, Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions, are filming the stage production with the intent of releasing it in the future, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

No timeline or release schedule has yet been set, but the goal was to capture the original Broadway cast before they depart the production on March 29.

The production cancelled performances from Feb. 10 through Feb. 14 to allow for filming. Public performances are set to resume Feb. 15.

The full original Broadway cast, led by Tony nominee Louis McCartney, who plays Henry Creel, will depart the production in March. A new cast, including Victor de Paula Rocha as Henry Creel, Ayana Cymone as Patty Newby, Shea Grant as Joyce Maldonado, Juan Carlos as Bob Newby and Matthew Erick White as James Hopper, Jr. will take over at that time.

The Broadway production opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 22, 2025 and has seen a rebound of interest after the release of the final season of the Stranger Things on Netflix.  Since then, the play has been one of the highest grossing shows on Broadway each week, most recently bringing in $1.4 million last week.

Written by Stranger Things writer Kate Trefrey, the story serves as a prequel to the Netflix series and has tie-ins to moments in the Season Five, as it explores the origin story of Henry Creel, otherwise known as the series’ villain, Vecna. Set in 1959, the play features the high school versions of characters from the television series as their lives are upended by Creel and his newfound discovery of his powers (which is hinted at in the final season and shown further in the play).

“It’s totally canon. It’s totally tied into the series with seasons one through four, but also reaching into the future with season five. It had to be this missing puzzle piece that connects all of these different things,” Trefry told The Hollywood Reporter in April.

The play is directed Stephen Daldry, and co-directed by Justin Martin. It came to Broadway after opening in London in December 2023, where McCartney also led the cast. The process of creating the play was shown in the Netflix documentary Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which also debuted in April 2025.
