The professors were called in to support the writing of much-anticipated movie ‘Werewulf’ directed by American Robert Eggers.

Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe, it is set in the 1300s and revolves around a monster terrorising an English village.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Mr Eggers – who also directed ‘Nosferatu’ (2024) and ‘The Northman’ (2022) – revealed that he has taken his push for historical authenticity to new extremes.

“We worked with two Oxford professors on the dialogue,” he said, “which is in Middle English, and then worked extensively with a dialect coach on a way to temper the pronunciation in a way that would be understandable to modern audiences”.

Set to be released in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2027, in the interview Mr Eggers reveals that they shot the film in Dartmoor as well forests in the south of England and in Wales.

This is not the first time that Oxford University dons have been called on to support a major Hollywood production.

Professor Robin Lane Fox of New College was a leading advisor for the 2004 film Alexander while Professor Michael Broers served as historical advisor for Ridley Scott’s 2023 film Napoleon.

In the 1970s reportedly an Oxford University scientist was brought in as a consultant for the 1978 thriller The Boys From Brazil to ensure the science of mammalian cloning was explained accurately.
