Mel Gibson’s blockbuster 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ is returning to theaters in September, ahead of his follow-ups The Resurrection of the Christ hitting the multiplex starting in May 2027.

Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment announced the nationwide re-release for the biblical epic from September 10 to 17, with the box office hit remastered from the original camera negative in 4K resolution. The return to theaters is helping Lionsgate pave the way to Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One getting a theatrical release from May 6, 2027.

A new theatrical trailer for The Passion of the Christ has been created for Gibson’s 2004 movie that became the highest-grossing Christian film and the highest-grossing independent film of all time. Lionsgate has also announced The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One will be executive produced by Cedar Hill and by Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions, with both companies investing in the follow-up movie.

Starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, The Passion of the Christ chronicles the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life.

“Bringing it back to theatres in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it in an entirely new way while inviting a new generation to discover it in theatres for the very first time. This also marks the beginning of the journey toward The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, one of the most ambitious and anticipated faith films ever brought to the screen,” Kevin Grayson, president, worldwide distribution for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement on Wednesday.
