Practical Magic 2 Unseats Spider-Man after six straight weeks at No. 1, as the Owens sisters finally gave the superhero something he couldn’t overcome.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day slipped from the top spot Friday as Practical Magic 2 opened to $13 million from 4,146 theaters. That puts Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman comfortably ahead of the competition heading into the rest of the weekend. Variety reports Warner Bros. is looking at an opening weekend of about $30 million for the sequel.
The rest of Friday’s Top 5 included a new action movie, two major holdovers and one Looney Tunes comeback that continues to hang around.
Practical Magic 2 Unseats Spider-Man and brings the Owens sisters back to No. 1
The first Practical Magic was hardly a box office sensation when it arrived in 1998. It opened with only $13 million against a reported $75 million budget and finished with $94 million worldwide. The movie found a much bigger audience later, however, eventually becoming the kind of cult favorite that fans kept revisiting long after it left theaters.
That long afterlife helped make a sequel possible. Practical Magic 2 moves the story ahead 25 years and finds Sally’s daughters dealing with the Owens family curse. Bullock and Kidman return alongside Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Lee Pace are among the newcomers.
For a movie following up a 1998 release, a $30 million opening would be a pretty impressive way to bring the franchise back. With Practical Magic 2 taking No. 1, the sequel has also managed to end one of the strongest box office runs of the summer.
Runner grabs second as Practical Magic 2 tops the box office
There was another newcomer near the top of the chart. Runner earned an estimated $2.5 million Friday from 2,568 locations, which was enough to put it in second place for the day.
Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson lead the action movie as a soldier and his decidedly less battle-ready partner trying to escape a cartel. Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George and Kate Box also star. Current estimates have Runner finishing the weekend somewhere around $6 million.
The Odyssey continues its run
Most movies would be thrilled to make the Top 5 during opening weekend. The Odyssey is doing it in weekend nine.
Christopher Nolan’s epic added another $2.06 million Friday, landing in third place for the day. It is expected to collect roughly $8.1 million over the full weekend. More importantly, that would take its domestic total to around $601 million.
Nine weekends later, audiences are clearly still showing up.

Losing the No. 1 spot probably won’t bother Spider-Man too much. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned another $2 million Friday as it entered its seventh weekend. Its weekend total is expected to reach roughly $8.5 million, which would put the movie at approximately $935.27 million domestically.
And that is where things get really interesting. The all-time domestic box office record belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which finished with $936.6 million.
In other words, Brand New Day is now just a little more than $1 million away from potentially taking down a record that has stood since 2015. So while Practical Magic 2 Unseats Spider-Man at No. 1, the superhero movie could still have an even bigger story coming very soon.
Coyote vs. Acme rounds out the Top 5
And yes, Wile E. Coyote is still hanging in there. Coyote vs. Acme took fifth place Friday with approximately $1.4 million.
The Looney Tunes comedy is expected to collect about $6.3 million for the weekend, which would push its domestic total to roughly $47.8 million after three weekends. After everything surrounding the movie before it finally reached theaters, simply seeing Coyote vs. Acme spend another weekend in the Top 5 makes its theatrical run a pretty interesting story on its own.
But Friday belonged to Practical Magic 2. More than 25 years after Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman first played the Owens sisters, their return has done something nobody managed for the previous six weeks: knock Spider-Man out of first place.
