Quentin Tarantino used a Sight and Sound opinion piece to criticize recent Hollywood releases, underscoring an industry view from a major director. The filmmaker said modern Hollywood movies often suffer from flaws, implausibilities, and audience pandering in BFI’s Sight and Sound article published Thursday, June 4. He compared the last decade to what he considers a previous low point, the 1980s.Tarantino cited rare recent exceptions he admired, including the 2026 Netflix film The Rip starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, and Kevin Costner’s two-part Horizon: An American Saga. He added that such cases are uncommon and wrote that he would often rather read a book.
