Shrek and Donkey have big plans in the teaser trailer for the forthcoming Shrek 5.

Universal Pictures released the footage Tuesday ahead of the sequel feature hitting theaters in summer 2027. Zendaya is among the newcomers to the voice cast that returns Mike Myers as the titular ogre, Eddie Murphy as his best pal Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct the DreamWorks Animation film that counts Brad Ableson as co-director. Michael McCullers penned the screenplay, with Christopher Meledandri credited for the story and producing alongside Gina Shay. Zendaya is set to voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia, while Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo play her two brothers, Fergus and Farkle, respectively.

The trailer for Shrek 5 features Donkey’s delight upon hearing that he and Shrek are intending to team up again. “It’s really happening,” Donkey exclaims. “Do you know what that means? I need a makeover — get my arms yoked and my back jacked, my abs ab-ded, maybe even tighten up my badonkadonk.”

Later, Donkey says, “Shrek and Donkey, two stalwart friends off on another whirlwind, big-city adventure.” The trailer ends with the lead characters in jail.

Among the moments getting attention on social media is a scene in which the Gingerbread Man declares, “I’m caked up like a freaking bakery,” after two gingerbread ladies smack the gumdrops attached to his backside.

The Shrek films are loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book, Shrek! The feature franchise kicked off with Shrek hitting theaters 25 years ago in May 2001.

Focusing on the titular misunderstood ogre and his fairytale friends, the series’ four theatrical movies have surpassed $2.9 billion at the global box office. The most recent title was 2010’s Shrek Forever After. It also spawned two spinoff movies centered on Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots, with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish arriving in 2022.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter that published late last year, Murphy admitted that voicing Donkey can be physically taxing. “You have a headache after a Shrek session,” he said at the time. “The donkey has a lot of singing. You’re on 10, and you’re doing it over and over again. The great thing, though, is it’s appreciated. Everybody loves the movie.”
