The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 is now open for submissions, offering independent filmmakers around the world a free shot at cash prizes, professional equipment and an exclusive industry program at one of Hollywood’s most iconic studios.
Now in its fifth year, the annual competition — established by arts organisation Creo and sponsored by Sony — accepts short films across six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, Student and Future Format.
Shortlisted filmmakers are flown to Los Angeles for a four-day program at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City from 7 to 10 June 2027, culminating in a gala awards ceremony on 10 June.
Sessions are led by Sony Pictures executives and cover production, film acquisition, animation, soundtracking and working with the press.
New this year is the Immersive category, presented by Meta, which accepts films shot in 3D, 180-degree or 360-degree video formats — reflecting the growing role of immersive technology in modern storytelling.
Most category winners walk away with a USD 5,000 cash prize, Sony Digital Imaging equipment and a Meta VR device.
The Future Format category — which specifically calls for vertical-format films shot in a 9:16 ratio — carries a USD 2,500 prize.
Open to Students, Advocates and Everyone In Between
Student filmmakers enrolled in diploma or degree film programmes worldwide are also eligible, with shortlists selected by continent to ensure global representation.
Winners in the Student category receive Sony equipment and a Meta VR device, with their institution also receiving equipment.
Returning this year is the Sustainability Prize, awarded to a film that best communicates themes of environment, diversity, equality and inclusion.
That winner receives USD 5,000, Sony equipment and promotion across the Awards’ platforms.
Entries close 15 December at 7:00 AM CST (Malaysia is exactly 14 hours ahead of CST).

Malaysian Talent Makes the Cut
Malaysia has already made its mark on the global stage.
In 2026, Malaysian filmmaker Arthur Teo Hui Teck earned a coveted spot on the global shortlist for his short film The Night Shift — a significant achievement given that the competition drew entries from over 8,400 filmmakers across 162 countries and territories.
No Malaysian has yet to claim a top-category win, but the shortlist placement signals that local talent is firmly on the world’s radar.
Neighbouring Singapore broke through last year when filmmaker Christine Seow won the Non-Fiction category at the June 2026 gala for her film Two Travelling Aunties — raising the bar for Southeast Asian filmmakers heading into 2027.
