The two biggest blockbusters of the late summer ruled the box office over Labor Day weekend, with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” taking the top spot for the sixth consecutive week, according to industry estimates released Monday.
The latest edition of the Marvel franchise, which stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, grossed $23.5 million Friday through Monday at North American theaters, bringing its cumulative domestic total to over $923 million, Rentrak reported.
It’s also crossed the $2.4 billion mark in worldwide grosses to become the third highest-grossing film of all time.
“The Odyssey” was second with $17.3 million over the four-day holiday in its eighth weekend in theaters, bringing its totals to $589 million domestically and over $1.6 billion worldwide.
“Coyote vs. Acme” was third with $15.8 million in its second weekend.
Fourth place went to the crime drama “By Any Means,” which opened with $9.3 million through Monday, followed by “Insidious: Out of the Further,” which grossed $8.1 million in its third weekend.
A 20th anniversary re-release of Pixar’s “Cars” claimed sixth place with $7.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Buddy” ($7.3 million), “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” ($4.4 million), “The End of Oak Street” ($4 million) and “The Dog Stars” ($3.5 million).
This weekend’s overall four-day domestic box office haul was estimated at $117 million. The year-to-date total is $7.38 billion — up 20.8% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
