There is a brand new title topping the list for the all-time biggest domestic opening weekend at the box office, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s debut has been adjusted in final numbers and will now surpass Avengers: Endgame, which previously led the way.

Sony Pictures‘ new movie earned $360 million from 4,487 North American screens in Monday actuals, which is up from the $355 million that the studio had projected on Sunday. This leaps past Avengers: Endgame’s previous record of $357.1 million in its domestic opening from April 2019, a start that for years had seemed to be an impossible one to beat.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven to be a head-spinning success story, as it also set records for the biggest Thursday previews and top Friday opening domestic sum, along with becoming Sony’s best-ever launch. Before the weekend, Sony had initially been projecting a much less dazzling start of $195 million domestic and $465 million global that would have still put the film among the top 10 all-time debuts. Hailing from producers Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, it carries a $225 million production budget.

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has focused his attention on the audience reaction, rather than whether the movie breaks the record. “There are many, many, many people going to see the movie,” he says. “What’s far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That’s way more important to me than this record or that record.”

Brand New Day has proven to be a crowd-pleaser, earning an A CinemaScore from audiences and delivering a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, although its critics score is a tad lower at 90. The movie’s viewership skewed young and male, as 36 percent of the audience fell between ages 18 and 24, while 61 percent of the crowd were men.

In the wake of this breathtaking success, Imax has changed course and announced Monday that it will split screens with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Spidey gives Marvel Studios new momentum ahead of this December’s release for Avengers: Doomsday, which also will not screen on Imax when it debuts.

Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo also star in the new movie from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. It centers on Marvel Comics’ signature hero as he endures a lonely life without his loved ones before an invisible enemy tracks him down.

In his review for THR, chief film critic David Rooney praised “a never-better Tom Holland.”

Holland’s previous film in the lead role as the web-slinger was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide in December 2021. That title falls from its standing as the No. 2 highest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever, thanks to Brand New Day. No Way Home’s impressive success — culminating with its $1.9 billion global total for No. 8 all-time — was seen as tough to replicate, given the buzzy appearances of past Peter Parkers in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, along with the lack of major theatrical competition coming out of COVID.

This latest weekend at the box office was estimated on Sunday to hit a collected $430 million to represent the biggest domestic frame ever, overtaking the $402.1 million from the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame. That result has helped 2026 go up by 15.2 percent over last year’s total to this point.
