Spider-Man rules the box office again, and after five weekends, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is starting to make the top of the box office chart look permanent.
According to Variety, the Sony and Marvel blockbuster earned an estimated $22.2 million domestically over the weekend, giving it a fifth consecutive weekend in first place. That’s already an impressive run, but the number everybody may be watching now is $891 million. That’s approximately where Spider-Man: Brand New Day stands domestically, putting it within striking distance of a record that has belonged to Star Wars: The Force Awakens for years.
The rest of the weekend gave Christopher Nolan another strong showing with The Odyssey, finally brought Coyote vs. Acme into theaters and delivered a much rougher result for Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars. Spider-Man, though, is still the one everybody is chasing.
Spider-Man rules as the box office run keeps growing
Five weekends at No. 1 would be enough to make this a huge theatrical run, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have something considerably bigger ahead of it. Spider-Man continues to dominate the box office with roughly $891 million domestically, putting the movie about $45 million away from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned more than $936 million in North America. That’s suddenly close enough to make this interesting.
Brand New Day dropped about 44% from last weekend, a pretty healthy hold for a movie this far into its run. Spider-Man stays No. 1 while newer releases continue trying to catch it, and another few weekends like this could change the conversation from how long Spider-Man can lead the box office to whether it can actually take the domestic crown. Spider-Man rules for a fifth weekend, but the bigger question now is how high this remarkable box office run can ultimately climb.
Then there’s the billion-dollar question. No movie has ever earned $1 billion from the North American box office alone, and while Spider-Man: Brand New Day still has quite a distance to go before that becomes reality, $891 million is enough to make the possibility worth watching. Spider-Man tops the box office yet again, and if audiences keep showing up, this run could end with considerably more than another weekend at No. 1.
The Odyssey keeps challenging the Spider-Man box office lead
If there’s another movie on this chart that refuses to leave, it’s The Odyssey. Saturday estimates made second place look like it could come down to a close race between Christopher Nolan’s epic and Coyote vs. Acme. By the end of the weekend, The Odyssey had the edge, even as Spider-Man continued to lead the box office.
The movie earned an estimated $14.6 million in its seventh weekend, bringing its domestic total to approximately $564 million. Seven weekends is a long time to remain this high on the weekend box office chart, and The Odyssey isn’t simply surviving while newer releases arrive. It’s still finishing ahead of most of them while Spider-Man stays No. 1.
Movies have opened, moved down the chart and disappeared from the conversation while Nolan’s film keeps finding audiences. At this point, the journey home may be taking a while, but The Odyssey doesn’t seem in any hurry to leave theaters. Spider-Man may still rule the top of the chart, but The Odyssey continues to have one of the strongest box office runs of the summer.
Coyote vs. Acme joins the weekend box office race
Wile E. Coyote couldn’t catch Spider-Man or Odysseus, but considering what happened to Coyote vs. Acme before this weekend, third place still feels pretty good. The long-delayed movie earned an estimated $13.5 million domestically, making it the biggest new release of the weekend while Spider-Man continued to lead the box office. There was a time when none of those numbers were supposed to exist.
Warner Bros. originally decided not to release the completed movie, setting off a backlash among filmmakers, fans and others around Hollywood. Ketchup Entertainment eventually acquired it, and after years of wondering whether the movie would ever reach an audience, people can finally buy tickets to see it. Spider-Man may still rule the weekend, but Coyote vs. Acme finally got its chance to compete at the box office.
Will Forte, Lana Condor and John Cena lead the live-action cast in a story that finally gives Wile E. Coyote a chance to do something about all those defective ACME products. He takes the company to court, and after decades of exploding rockets and gadgets that rarely seemed interested in working correctly, you can’t really blame him.
Insidious: Out of the Further stays in the box office Top 5
Insidious: Out of the Further slipped from second place to fourth, earning approximately $10.1 million in its second weekend. That brings the latest Insidious movie to around $43 million domestically.
The drop was roughly 60%, which is steep but hardly shocking for horror. These movies often do a big chunk of their business during opening weekend and then settle quickly afterward. The reported production budget of about $18 million helps put the numbers in a different light, too. Insidious doesn’t need the kind of box office totals a massive superhero movie does to make its theatrical run worthwhile. For now, horror fans are still showing up.
The Dog Stars struggles against the weekend box office competition
Then there’s The Dog Stars. Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller earned an estimated $8 million from 3,330 theaters, putting it in fifth place. That’s slightly better than the roughly $7 million it appeared headed toward on Saturday, but it’s still not the opening anyone wanted.
The movie reportedly cost more than $80 million to make, which means it has quite a bit of ground to cover after an $8 million domestic debut. Jacob Elordi plays Hig, a survivor living in a devastated world with his dog until a mysterious radio transmission suggests he may not be as alone as he thought.
Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney and Benedict Wong round out a cast that certainly isn’t short on recognizable names. The problem this weekend wasn’t the talent involved. It was getting enough people into theaters.

So Wile E. Coyote finally got his movie into theaters, The Odyssey is somehow still near the top seven weekends later and The Dog Stars has some work to do. Spider-Man rules for the fifth straight weekend, and once again, nobody has been able to knock Spider-Man: Brand New Day out of first place.
Five weekends down, roughly $45 million separating Spider-Man: Brand New Day from the domestic record, and suddenly the end of this Spider-Man box office run may be a lot more interesting than anybody expected.
