According to Variety, Spider-Man secures a sixth straight weekend at the top of the domestic box office. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been No. 1 for more than a month, but another weekend win is no longer the most interesting part of the run. The movie is now getting very close to the domestic box office record.
The movie has reached roughly $923 million domestically, putting Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its $936 million record within striking distance.
Spider-Man secures its sixth straight box office win
Another $18 million came in for Spider-Man: Brand New Day between Friday and Sunday, and the holiday weekend should push that figure to roughly $23 million. More importantly, Spider-Man claims its sixth straight box office win. That’s rare company. Avatar: The Way of Water was the last movie to do better, spending seven weekends at No. 1 back in 2022.
Spider-Man wins again, but there’s another number that’s a lot more interesting now: $936 million. That’s the domestic total Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been sitting on since 2015. Brand New Day is now at roughly $923 million. Thirteen million dollars isn’t much when a movie has already made this kind of money.
The worldwide total is even crazier. Brand New Day has reached about $2.4 billion, putting it behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame globally. With those numbers, Spider-Man takes its box office run into territory very few movies ever reach.
The Odyssey refuses to leave the top of the chart
Eight weekends later, The Odyssey is still here. While Spider-Man stays No. 1, The Odyssey continues to hold onto second place. That’s probably the easiest way to describe what Christopher Nolan’s movie has done this summer. It added approximately $13 million over the three-day weekend and is expected to finish Labor Day at around $17 million.
Its domestic total has reached roughly $588 million. Worldwide, it has made about $1.56 billion. Those are enormous numbers on their own. What makes them even more impressive is that we’re talking about the movie’s eighth weekend, not its second or third.
New movies have arrived throughout the summer, but The Odyssey keeps hanging around near the top. Even as Spider-Man claims another weekend victory, Nolan’s blockbuster has shown a pretty remarkable bit of staying power this far into its theatrical run.
Coyote vs. Acme scores another strong weekend
There are box office drops, and then there’s what happened with Coyote vs. Acme. The movie fell only 27% in its second weekend. That’s terrific. It earned another $11.3 million between Friday and Sunday and should finish the holiday weekend with about $14.5 million. Its domestic total is now around $37 million.
Not bad for a movie that, at one point, wasn’t supposed to be released at all. After everything Coyote vs. Acme went through before finally getting into theaters, audiences sticking with it might be the most satisfying box office story of the weekend.
A drop that small also gives the movie something every studio wants after opening weekend: a reason to believe people are still discovering it.
By Any Means wins the battle of the newcomers
If you were looking for a breakout among the new movies, this wasn’t really the weekend for it. By Any Means still came out ahead of the other newcomers. The Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg crime thriller opened with approximately $7 million during the traditional weekend and is expected to reach about $9 million through Monday.
Variety reports the movie cost roughly $30 million to make. Audiences also seem to like it more than critics. The movie received a B+ CinemaScore, while Variety listed its Rotten Tomatoes critics score at 52%.
That makes the next couple of weekends important. A strong hold could give By Any Means some room to build, especially after a Labor Day frame where most of the attention remained on movies that were already established.
Spider-Man stays No. 1 as new movies struggle
The rest of the new releases had a much rougher time. Fall 2: Deadpoint opened with approximately $2.3 million and is heading toward $2.9 million through Labor Day. Onslaught did even less business, taking in about $2 million over the weekend and an estimated $2.3 million through Monday.
So summer ends in a pretty strange place. The new movies couldn’t knock the older ones out. The Odyssey is still near the top after eight weeks, while Coyote vs. Acme barely dropped.
And with its latest victory, Spider-Man secures six consecutive weekends at No. 1.
The next box office story almost writes itself. Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day find another $13 million and finally knock Star Wars: The Force Awakens out of the domestic record book?
We may not have to wait very long to find out.
