Spider-Man wins another weekend, although Friday made things a little more interesting than anyone probably expected. Insidious: Out of the Further briefly jumped ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day when the first numbers came in, giving the horror sequel one night at No. 1.

That didn’t last long. Once the rest of the weekend was counted, Brand New Day finished with another $39 million and claimed its fourth straight weekend on top.

Four weeks into a theatrical run, making $39 million in three days is still pretty incredible. It also pushed an already massive Spider-Man box office total even higher.

According to Variety, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now earned around $855 million in North America and $2.22 billion worldwide. Those aren’t just huge summer numbers anymore. They’re historic.

Spider-Man wins again as some huge records get closer

What makes this fourth weekend for Spider-Man: Brand New Day especially fun to watch is that every new batch of ticket sales now pushes the movie toward another major milestone. Its domestic total is sitting at roughly $855 million.

Avengers: Endgame finished with around $858 million in North America, which means Spider-Man is basically staring that number in the face. And then things get really interesting.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been sitting on top of the domestic box office record book with roughly $936 million since 2015. For years, that number has looked almost impossible to reach. Brand New Day still has some work to do, but once a movie gets to $855 million, the conversation changes.

This isn’t some distant target anymore. If the movie continues to hold well over the next few weekends, passing The Force Awakens starts to look like a very real possibility.

Then there’s the dream number. $1 billion domestically.

No movie has ever done that without adjusting for inflation. It would still take an incredible finish for Brand New Day to get there, but considering where the movie already stands, it doesn’t feel completely ridiculous to at least talk about it.

Worldwide, Spider-Man has already sailed past $2.2 billion. At this point, nobody is wondering whether the movie was a hit. We’re just watching to see how high it can go.

Spider-Man wins the weekend, but Insidious still starts strong

Insidious: Out of the Further had to settle for second place after briefly taking No. 1 on Friday. The movie opened with $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters.

That’s below Insidious: The Red Door, which started with $33 million in 2023. On paper, that difference is pretty easy to notice. But Insidious has something working in its favor that a lot of the giant movies in theaters right now don’t.

These movies are relatively inexpensive to make. Out of the Further reportedly cost around $18 million. That changes the math quite a bit.

An $18 million horror movie doesn’t have the same mountain to climb as a giant summer blockbuster carrying a nine-figure production budget. A movie like this can open in the $20 million range and still have a perfectly reasonable path to success once international ticket sales and the rest of its theatrical run are added.

That formula has worked for Insidious for years. The first five movies combined for about $740 million worldwide, and none of them needed enormous budgets to get there.

Insidious: Chapter 2 still owns the biggest opening in the franchise at $40 million, while The Red Door eventually became the series’ biggest worldwide release with roughly $189 million.

So no, Out of the Further didn’t set any franchise records this weekend. It probably didn’t need to.

The Odyssey box office run just keeps going

Six weekends later, The Odyssey is still hanging around near the top of the chart. Christopher Nolan’s movie earned another $19.5 million over the weekend and finished third.

The number that really jumps out, though, is the drop. The movie fell only around 17% from the previous weekend. That’s a terrific hold for something that has already been in theaters this long.

Even on another weekend where Spider-Man wins, The Odyssey keeps reminding everyone that it has some serious staying power. The Odyssey box office total now stands at approximately $539 million domestically and $1.44 billion worldwide. It has also become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.

Usually, there comes a point during a blockbuster run when you can see audiences starting to move on. New movies arrive. Screens disappear. Weekend grosses begin dropping a lot faster.

The Odyssey apparently has other plans. Six weeks into its run, people are still buying tickets in big numbers, and the movie remains one of the biggest things playing despite all the newer competition around it.

Mutiny has a tougher weekend for Jason Statham

Jason Statham has been one of the more dependable action stars at the box office, but Mutiny didn’t get the kind of domestic opening some of his recent movies have enjoyed.

The film made about $7.5 million from 2,703 theaters and finished in sixth place. With a reported production budget of around $40 million, that’s a pretty soft start. There is a little more context worth keeping in mind. Statham has spent years building a strong audience outside North America, and several of his action movies have leaned heavily on overseas ticket sales.

Mutiny stars Statham as a former Marine who is framed for murdering his billionaire boss. From there, he has to stay alive long enough to figure out who set him up and clear his name. A $7.5 million domestic opening isn’t where you’d want to start with a $40 million movie. Now we’ll see whether international audiences give it a better story.

Spa Weekend struggles while two holdovers stay close

Spa Weekend had an even rougher time. The comedy opened with roughly $3.05 million from 2,009 theaters and landed in ninth place. With a reported budget of around $20 million, that’s a difficult first weekend.

Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau star as longtime friends who head to Palm Springs for a luxury getaway. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore directed the movie.

Elsewhere, The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie were practically sitting on top of each other in the weekend standings. Both movies earned around $9 million in their second weekends, leaving the race close enough that the final order could still shift once official numbers arrive.

The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, has now made approximately $38 million in North America and $86 million worldwide. The movie reportedly cost around $80 million.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie has reached about $35.4 million domestically and $103 million worldwide. Its reported $40 million budget was shared by Paramount and Spin Master.

There was plenty happening around Spider-Man this weekend. Nobody managed to keep him out of first place for very long.

Insidious: Out of the Further got to enjoy one night at No. 1, but once the entire weekend was counted, Spider-Man: Brand New Day ended up right back where it has been since opening.
