DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day stormed into first place this weekend. The sci-fi thriller gave theaters a true summer event. Audiences also proved they still crave original science fiction.

According to Variety, the Universal release pulled in $19 million Friday, including Thursday previews. That puts its opening weekend near $44 million domestically.

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day opens strong

In Disclosure Day, Emily Blunt plays meteorologist Margaret Fairchild. Her character stumbles into a sprawling government cover-up. At stake is proof that we are not alone.

She gets plenty of star power alongside her too. The ensemble includes Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell.

Topping the chart is great news for Universal. Yet the studio reportedly poured about $115 million into the film. So it needs real staying power to become a true hit.

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day wins, but Obsession is the summer’s biggest surprise

Even with Disclosure Day at number one, the real headline could be Obsession. That Focus Features horror sensation keeps surprising everyone.

Somehow this low-budget thriller just keeps winning. It returned to second place in weekend five. By Sunday it should add $21 million, nearing $190 million domestic.

Here is the wild part. Curry Barker shot Obsession for under $1 million. The return ranks it among 2026’s most profitable films.

Scary Movie continues its franchise comeback

The Scary Movie revival is still going strong. It hung onto a top-three spot in its second weekend.

Projections put the parody sequel around $14.6 million for the frame. Its domestic haul now sits near $85 million.

Best of all, the Wayans family is back where it started. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Craig Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans all contributed. Fans also welcomed Anna Faris and Regina Hall as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks.

The second-weekend fall was steep, but it hardly matters. Against a reported $30 million budget, the movie is already in the black.

Horror keeps winning with Backrooms

A24’s Backrooms just keeps chugging along. This weekend it settled into fourth, well behind Disclosure Day.

The film looks set to add about $12 million more. Its North American total now approaches $160 million.

Between Backrooms and Obsession, the trend is obvious. Horror has been the year’s box office engine.

Masters of the Universe struggles in its second weekend

Down at number five sat Masters of the Universe, well behind Disclosure Day. The Amazon MGM release rounded things out.

Projections give the action adaptation around $9.2 million this frame. Sadly, that is a sharp drop from opening weekend.

The fall hurts more because the film reportedly cost $200 million. So overseas results suddenly matter a lot.

Weekend box office top five

  1. Disclosure Day, $44 million projected opening weekend
  2. Obsession, $21 million projected weekend gross
  3. Scary Movie, $14.6 million projected weekend gross
  4. Backrooms, $12 million projected weekend gross
  5. Masters of the Universe, $9.2 million projected weekend gross

Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day sits on top, horror keeps dominating, and old franchises fight for scraps. All of it makes this one of the most competitive summers in memory.
