After spending the last few years building up his TV empire, prolific creator Taylor Sheridan has set his sights on the big screen again.
Sheridan’s Weatherford-based Bosque Ranch Productions and his frequent partner 101 Studios announced this week that they will produce two new feature films written by the creator of popular shows like “Yellowstone,” “Landman” and “Tulsa King,” TV Insider reported.
“Visalia” and “Capture the Flag” are Sheridan’s first feature film screenplays since 2021, as the writer-producer with Fort Worth roots has focused in recent years on his many television projects.
“Visalia” is about a young Cuban woman who moves to America in pursuit of freedom, only to be drawn back to her homeland by shifting political winds. “Capture the Flag,” meanwhile, focuses on a NASA engineer working to build a reusable spacecraft for travel to the moon and back. When a powerful tech billionaire enters his orbit, he’s forced to weigh his ambition against his moral views.
The screenplays are based on original concepts from producer Andrew Lauren, who developed the stories with Sheridan years ago, before “Yellowstone” became one of TV’s biggest hits and spawned its own universe of spinoffs. Lauren, whose credits include the Oscar-winning “The Brutalist,” will also be a producer on the films.
With the film projects, Sheridan is returning to the medium that first earned him critical acclaim.
Sheridan wrote the screenplay for the 2015 hit “Sicario,” for which he was nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award for best original screenplay. He also earned an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay for 2016’s “Hell or High Water,” which was nominated for three other Oscars, including best picture. Sheridan wrote and directed the 2017 crime film “Wind River” and wrote the 2018 sequel “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.”
The last film screenplays Sheridan wrote were for 2021’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” starring Angelina Jolie, and “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse,” starring Michael B. Jordan.
The return to film projects doesn’t mean that Sheridan is hitting the brakes on his TV empire. After scoring a massive hit with “Yellowstone,” which aired from 2018 to 2024, Sheridan created the hit prequels “1883” and “1923,” while also working on shows including “Mayor of Kingstown,” “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” “Lioness,” “The Madison” and the upcoming “Frisco King,” a “Tulsa King” spinoff set in Frisco.
