It’s the pearl anniversary of “Tin Cup.”

This month the 1996 golf rom-com starring Kevin Costner, Don Johnson and Rene Russo — plus Cheech Marin as a scene-stealing caddie — was released in theaters to become top-grossing golf movie of all time.

When Ron Shelton, the writer of the film as well as the sports classics “White Men Can’t Jump” and “Bull Durham,” was asked by Hampton Sheet Magazine sports contributor Bobby Love if he’d ever make a “Tin Cup” sequel, Shelton revealed that he’d actually been approached to adapt the movie for the Great White Way by a “now-deceased Broadway producer.”

The Oscar-nominated director added that though the stage show didn’t pan out, he does have “a great [movie] sequel outline” for “Tin Cup” that’s “really a next generation story.”

The movie was made by Warner Bros., so even if Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca don’t bite, maybe they’ll screen the film at the studio’s next employee Monday movie night, which features films from the Warners archives. A cast reunion could even be in order!

Hampton Sheet publisher Joan Jedell quipped to us that Paramount should pay attention, too. (After all, David Ellison did promise 30 films per year when he buys Warner Bros.) “Costner and Johnson might be septuagenarians, but their appeal is timeless. To quote another one of Kevin’s movies, make the sequel and… they will come,” Jedell said.
