Tom Holland Just Made Hollywood History

Last year was somewhat lackluster for Marvel. Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were well-received by critics, but they earned a tepid amount at the box office, especially compared to James Gunn’s Superman. This year, however, the House of Ideas came back swinging…on a web, that is! Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiered last week, and it’s off to an insanely strong start. How strong, you ask? While the exact numbers are still coming in, the film is on track to earn $355 million domestically in its opening weekend. For context, that’s the second highest-grossing domestic opening in movie history!

Needless to say, this is a real feather in the cap for Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland. Hot off the heels of starring in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster hit The Odyssey, he is now headlining the biggest movie in the world. By the time the smoke clears, Brand New Day may earn closer to $2 billion than $1 billion. However, just with this first weekend box office, Holland has another notch on his belt as a performer: when it comes to opening weekends, the Spider-Man performer has starred in all four of the highest-earning films ever made.

Face It, Tiger: You Just Hit The Jackpot

Right now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is enjoying some downright meteoric success. Domestically, it has earned $355 million in its first weekend in theaters. If you count the worldwide box office, this latest Marvel film earned a whopping $927 million. That’s kind of mind-boggling when you think about it: it only took a few days for Spider-Man’s latest high-flying adventure to earn very close to a billion dollars. That leaves other summer blockbusters in the dust, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, which only earned $345 million during its entire theatrical run. Because of this, fans can’t wait to see how far up the box office this tenacious spider can climb.

Already, however, Brand New Day lead actor Tom Holland has made movie history. His latest movie had the second-highest opening weekend in Hollywood history. Unsurprisingly, it was beaten by Avengers: Endgame, in which Earth’s mightiest heroes finished the fight with Thanos. The movie with the third-highest opening weekend was Avengers: Infinity War. Finally, the film with the fourth-highest opening weekend was Brand New Day‘s predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home. That means that Holland has not only starred in the four biggest film debuts in Hollywood history, but he’s been the leading actor in half of them!

The Once And Future King Of The Superheroes

Marvel has effectively made Tom Holland the biggest movie star in the world. That might explain why he’s still happy to swing around as Spider-Man despite infamously saying years ago that he’d want to be done with the role by the time he turned 30. It also explains why Brand New Day producer Amy Pascal recently told Collider, “We hope Tom’s gonna be our Spider-Man forever.” In a world where superhero fatigue has doomed films like Supergirl, Holland remains someone who can put butts in theater seats all across the world.

Sorry, Tom, but as far as Marvel and Sony are concerned, you’re the new Hugh Jackman. That is, you’re going to be doing this until you’re 90!
