Multihyphenate film and TV pioneer and billionaire Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry will be among the honorees at the sixth annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards.
The annual award show spotlights celebrities, influencers and icons from across the entertainment and media industries who’ve made an impact on Black culture. Previous honorees include Whoopi Goldberg, Cardi B, Don Lemon, Sharon Stone, Niecy Nash, Chlöe Bailey, Law Roach, Floyd Mayweather, Kelis and Lizzo, among others.
This year, Perry will be presented with the Innovator Award, which is awarded to an individual who “transformed a specific genre of the entertainment industry” and salutes their “longevity and consistency in their field.”
Over the course of his 30-year career in the entertainment business, Perry has built a reputation as a prolific TV and film producer and entrepreneur. Among his recent releases are Netflix’s “Joe’s College Road Trip,” a spinoff of the long-running Madea movie franchise; season 2 of “Beauty in the Black”; the historical drama “The Six Triple Eight,” with Kerry Washington; thrillers “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland and “Straw” with Taraji P. Henson; and the bible-inspired “Ruth & Boaz,” all part of his creative partnership with the streamer. Also set at Netflix are Perry’s new firefighter series, “Where There’s Smoke,” and “Why Did I Get Married Again?,” with Henson joining the cast for the third installment in the marriage-focused movie franchise. His upcoming film, “The Gospel of Christmas,” is set to star Fantasia. Perry’s series “Divorced Sistas” is airing on BET alongside his long-running shows, like “The Oval.” He has also recently been in business at Prime Video, where he released a string of movies including “Divorce in the Black,” “Duplicity” and “Finding Joy.”
In 2019, Perry celebrated the opening of Tyler Perry Studios’ new location in Atlanta — the first major studio owned entirely by a Black person. The 330-acre property features 12 sound stages named for trailblazing Black entertainers, like Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, Spike Lee and Will Smith.
Tiffany Haddish returns to host the Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards ceremony, which will take place on Friday, June 5, at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. Grammy winner Babyface returns as musical director for the star-studded event.
This year, the Impact Awards will benefit the Hollywood Cares Foundation, with proceeds from the event going directly toward supporting the foundation’s initiatives. The nonprofit organization was launched in 2022 by Hollywood Unlocked founder and CEO Jason Lee to uplift underserved youth in Black and Brown communities through programming centered around youth leadership, civic engagement, and personal development.
