Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s son, Jason Sanjay, is gearing up for his directorial debut with the upcoming film Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan in the lead. Ahead of the film’s release, the filmmaker opened up in his first-ever interview, where he spoke about his cinematic influences, aspirations, and his famous father. During the conversation, Jason revealed that if he ever got the opportunity to collaborate with an international star, he would love to take Vijay to Hollywood.

During a conversation with Behindwoods TV, Jason Sanjay was asked about a hypothetical scenario in which Hollywood action star Jason Statham watched Sigma, loved the film, and expressed interest in working with him. When asked which Tamil actor he would choose to cast alongside Statham in such a collaboration, Jason answered without hesitation. He said, “My dad (Vijay). It will prove to be a great collaboration between the two.” He then joked that his response would likely spark a wave of memes and jokes on social media once people heard it.

When asked why he chose to pursue filmmaking instead of acting, despite being the son of one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, Jason Sanjay said spending time on film sets from a young age naturally drew him towards direction. He explained that watching the filmmaking process unfold behind the scenes sparked his interest and ultimately inspired him to take up the craft. He said, “Since childhood, I had access to sets. That was my privilege. I had good exposure. I started to feel comfortable there. I normalised going to sets as part of my life. So, the interest sparked from there.”

However, he revealed that filmmaking was not always his first choice as a career. He added, “At first, I wanted to become a pilot. In between, I was also interested in becoming a cricketer. It was during Class 11 and 12 that I started showing an interest in cinema. In college, I wanted to pursue filmmaking.”

Jason went on to add, “Since childhood, I loved storytelling—randomly narrating incidents to my friends. Slowly, I started scribbling down these ideas. Eventually, it became a hobby. I went to Canada to learn filmmaking. There, I understood what I wanted to do. While learning there, our professor would send us to these ad agencies, where we helped make advertisements for startup companies. We practised our skills there. It gave me a lot of confidence.”

Jason Sanjay also shared that volunteering at the Toronto International Film Festival proved to be a valuable learning experience. He said the opportunity allowed him to watch a diverse range of films from across the world, broadening his perspective and deepening his understanding of different styles of filmmaking.

Meanwhile, Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut, Sigma, was originally slated to hit theatres on July 31. However, the film’s release has reportedly been postponed.
