As “Spider-Man” aims to rule the box office, it won’t be long before talk inevitably turns to the future for the lucrative franchise.
But because the character is shared between Sony and Marvel Studios, greenlighting a new film requires coordination between the two competitors.
As of now, there are no deals in place for another Spidey movie after “Brand New Day,” but that’s by design. A Sony source tells P6H that all of the “Spider-Man” film deals are done on a movie-by-movie basis — though it’s widely believed that Tom Holland will show up in “Avengers: Doomsday” or its 2027 sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
There has been friction between the two sides in the past: In 2019, there was a brief stand-off over Spider-Man’s future after the studios couldn’t come to a new agreement, even going so far as to end the partnership — until Holland stepped in and helped broker a new deal. Given how successful the collaboration continues to be, it would be a surprise if a fifth Spidey flick wasn’t on the way.
On Thursday, Disney+ surprisingly canceled its Marvel series “Wonder Man,” despite renewing it for a second season earlier this year. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” is the co-creator on “Wonder Man.” The shock reversal led to speculation that Cretton was being earmarked for the next Spidey film instead, (though he did say recently that a sequel to his 2021 MCU film, “Shang-Chi,” was also in active development).
For his part, Holland has expressed openness to continuing with the franchise, though he added that there’s “a whole plan” for his eventual transition out of the role. “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton,” he told Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast his week.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said he wants to bring Miles Morales, an alt-universe version of Spider-Man, into the MCU. But he’ll have to wait. Sony has told him to stand down until they finish their animated “Spider-Verse” trilogy, in which Morales is the central character.
“Brand New Day” could at least be a bright spot for Marvel: The studio’s post-”Endgame” days have been littered with far more disappointments than outright hits, contributing to the narrative that the once-bulletproof brand is stuck in a lull.
A strong performance from “Brand New Day” would give Marvel some much-needed momentum heading into “Avengers: Doomsday” this winter after a 2025 that saw all three of its films perform to various degrees of disappointment.
The studio is trying to prove it still has its special formula that shot it to the top of the pop culture landscape for a decade. For all of Peter Parker’s superpowers, perhaps his greatest ability may be his box office strength.
