Jason Lee became one of the biggest TV stars of the 00s thanks to his starring role in the smash hit sitcom, My Name Is Earl, which ran from 2005 to 2009. The Californian actor, who initially found fame as a professional skateboarder in the late 80s and early 90s, landed his first major film role in Kevin Smith’s cult 1995 comedy film Mallrats, which paved the way for leading parts in Heartbreakers, A Guy Thing, and of course, My Name Is Earl.
Following his Hollywood success, Jason, 56, stepped back from the spotlight for nearly a decade, focusing primarily on voice work and smaller supporting roles.

Jason Lee’s acting hiatus
After cementing his household name status with My Name Is Earl, Jason enjoyed huge success in the 2000s, landing major roles in hit series like Memphis Beat and Raising Hope, alongside films such as Cop Out and Behaving Badly.
He also starred as Dave Seville in the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, with the fourth film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, marking his last starring movie role before taking somewhat of a hiatus for the next ten years.
© JESSICA BROOKS/NETFLIXDuring this period between 2015 and 2024, Jason primarily focused on voice work for series like We Bare Bears, The Harper House, and Lego Pixar: BrickToons, alongside a handful of supporting film roles, including reprising his character Brodie Bruce in the 2019 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back sequel.
Last year, however, he returned to the screen in Netflix‘s mystery comedy-drama The Residence, starring opposite Uzo Aduba and Randall Park.
Reasons for Jason Lee’s hiatus
Almost twenty years ago, Jason developed a keen interest in photography. Eager to “understand things a little bit more as an actor,” the Mallrats actor bought a camera and “started just roaming America and documenting its weirdness and its strange beauty,” he told The Guardian in 2021.
© FilmMagicShifting his creative focus from the screen to photography, Jason has since published a series of books chronicling his annual road trips across America. “Some people go hiking, some people go on hunting expeditions or whatever, I jump in my car with my camera gear, drive around and shoot photos,” he said.
During his break from Hollywood, Jason relocated his family from Los Angeles to Texas for four years. Sharing the reason for his move away from Tinseltown, the actor told the publication: “Back in the Earl days we shot as many as 20 episodes a season – that was a [expletive] long, long haul. Earl was an amazing experience but certainly a grind, it was a lot of work.

Jason is married to Turkish-Australian actor Ceren Alkac. The couple, who wed in 2008, share four children: Sonny, Casper, Alberta, and Edith. Jason shares his eldest son, Pilot, with his ex-fiancée, actress Beth Riesgraf.
