ZZ Top scrapped its Aug. 5 concert at the Hollywood Bowl due to Drummer Frank Beard facing health issues. The band pushes forward on its tour with Michael Monahan taking over the drums.
Billy Gibbons took to social media about the cancellation. “Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance,” Gibbons wrote. “Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption.”
The Los Angeles date was supposed to launch the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band’s headlining summer tour. Cheap Trick had plans to open the show.
Frank Beard has been the band’s drummer for more than 55 years, joining in 1969. He played on albums from First Album in 1971 all the way through La Futura in 2012.
The musician left the group last year to deal with foot and ankle problems. John Douglas and Michael Monahan both sat in during that time. Frank Beard came back in Sept. 2025 and had been playing with them until this recent setback.
Billy Gibbons is now the only classic member in the touring lineup. Bassist Dusty Hill died in 2021 at age 72. His guitar tech Elwood Francis took his place.
The band played without Frank Beard on Saturday night in Saratoga, California. A spokesperson told Rolling Stone that Gibbons and Francis will keep going with Monahan on drums.
The Big One tour picks up Tuesday in Redmond, Washington, and runs through an Oct. 9 show in Port Wentworth, Georgia. Ticket holders for the Hollywood Bowl show will get refunds at the point of purchase. All dates are on the official ZZ Top website.
