Steven Spielberg is hands-down the most commercially successful director of all time — he has helmed 35 feature films ranging from popcorn blockbusters to prestige releases, which collectively grossed almost $11 billion at the global box office. With a career spanning six decades, he is also one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers; however, his recent ventures have arguably been hit or miss. While the jury is still out on his latest film, it has so far beaten one of his most acclaimed dramas.

With a current worldwide gross of $193,668,140, Disclosure Day has now outpaced one of Spielberg’s other cinematic successes. Both films were highly anticipated before release, but for different reasons — with Disclosure Day seeing the filmmaker return to sci-fi, while the latter premiered at the height of the year’s Oscar season.

‘Disclosure Day’s Perfectly Timed Theatrical Release

Disclosure Day capitalized on this year’s summer blockbuster window, surpassing debut projections with a global gross of $92.9 million. Much of that reception can be linked to the renewed interest in UFOs following the government’s recent release of declassified documents about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. The timing was unintentional yet serendipitous, because it has since spurred conspiracy theories about Spielberg’s supposed involvement in a real UFO “disclosure” project. There are also rumors that Disclosure Day is a “secret” sequel to his previous sci-fi epic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which added an element of nostalgia to the anticipation that fueled Disclosure Day‘s success.

Both films were commercial hits in their own right, but context matters. Released in October 2015, Bridge of Spies grossed about $165.4 million against its $40 million production budget, while Disclosure Day has so far grossed $172.7 million against a reported production budget of $115 million. Both movies boast all-star ensemble casts, with this year’s sci-fi epic led by Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, and Colin Firth, while the historical drama featured an ensemble cast led by Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, and the screenplay was co-written by the Coen Brothers. Bridge of Spies garnered six nominations at the 2016 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Disclosure Day still has ground to cover to break even and become profitable after marketing, with both films finding themselves at the tail end of Spielberg’s top 20 highest-grossing films, outranked by The BFG for the 18th spot with $194.6 million.

‘Bridge of Spies’ Box Office Success Cannot Be Understated

It’s worth noting that Bridge of Spies succeeded during a low point in Hollywood’s box-office history. 2015 saw the worst-performing October in the domestic market in 15 years, down roughly 49% compared to October 2014. The Martian and Bridge of Spies survived a perfect storm of critical failures, adult drama saturation, and the rise of streaming platforms. October 2015 left in its wake high-profile box office bombs like Pan, Rock the Kasbah, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Steve Jobs. In contrast, June 2026 marks a historic resurgence for Hollywood, driven by franchise revivals, originals, and the breakout success of digital creators. Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, Obsession, and Backrooms top this month’s biggest wins.

Disclosure Day and Bridge of Spies operate in very different landscapes defined by technological breakthroughs and industry trends, but their common denominator is Spielberg, whose visionary, prestige-driven storytelling continues to defy expectations. That was all summed up in his 2022 autobiographical masterpiece, The Fabelmans — its main protagonist’s parents inspired his analytical and artistic approach to filmmaking.
