Brad Pitt has no problem watching other actors work, but one popular form of entertainment apparently tests his patience. The Oscar-winning star recently explained why he avoids pornography, and his answer had less to do with the subject matter than with something he takes very seriously.
Brad Pitt says porn’s bad acting ‘drives me crazy’
During a conversation with Esquire, Brad Pitt was watching the World Cup when he started criticizing soccer players for exaggerating injuries to win fouls. He jokingly offered to teach Neymar how to make those moments look more convincing, arguing that some players could use a lesson in subtlety. “I’m going to show him how to sell it…… how not to do it too often so it reads as real. I got a whole curriculum,” Pitt said.
That complaint led Pitt to a much broader point about performances that feel fake. He compared soccer’s dramatic flopping with old-fashioned movie acting, particularly scenes where performers would dramatically “swoon.” Then came his blunt punchline: “Bad acting drives me crazy. It’s why I can’t watch porn.”
The comment fits Pitt’s larger obsession with performance. At 62, he still approaches acting like a student, talking excitedly about performers he respects and what makes their work click. He singled out James Gandolfini in Killing Them Softly and praised Colin Farrell for “emoting the way he did with an inch of rubber on your face?”
For Pitt, real emotion seems to beat flashy spectacle. He said watching Farrell perform under layers of makeup and physical limits left him impressed, even though he admitted prosthetics and painful makeup can “drive” him crazy.
That mindset also shapes the roles Pitt chooses. He wants every new character to contain something he has never attempted before, even if that change only appears in a single scene. His upcoming projects include Heart of the Beast, a survival drama about an ex-Special Forces soldier stranded in Alaska with his military-trained dog, and The Riders, a darker thriller.
