More than any other time of the year, Christmas is for re-watching our favorites. Every twelve months, families across the world settle in to catch their annual festive viewing, although everyone has a different rotation of titles. From alternative favorites such as Die Hard and the Billy Bob Thornton-led Bad Santa to universally acclaimed classics such as Frank Capra‘s It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street, it’s the same movies time and again that keep us beaming from ear to ear with yuletide joy.
Another of these classics beloved by generations of viewers is 1954’s White Christmas, the musical comedy featuring the genius work of iconic composer and songwriter Irving Berlin. At the time of writing, White Christmas is one of the ten most-streamed titles on Prime Video in the U.S., as families settle in to watch Bing Crosby work his magic. Crosby, of course, isn’t alone, with the rest of the White Christmas cast featuring the likes of George‘s aunt Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye, and Vera-Ellen, all under the directorial eye of Michael Curtiz. Boasting an 89% approval rating from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that this is an unquestionably universal festive favorite. For those yet to see White Christmas, a synopsis reads:
“Two talented song and dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. One winter they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. The result is stuff dreams are made of.”
‘White Christmas’ Was a Huge Box Office Hit
Across its many re-releases in theaters and its original box office run, White Christmas has earned an impressive $32.8 million worldwide, with almost all of this coming from domestic revenue. To this day, this figure is enough to make White Christmas the 85th highest-grossing movie musical of all time globally. However, when adjusting for inflation, which would place the movie’s haul at around $140 million, White Christmas climbs this ranking, eventually reaching position #40. Perhaps the most notable new movie the film has outgrossed when adjusted is 2024’s Mean Girls, the toe-tapping remake of the classic 2004 chick flick.
