Hollywood has spent years leaning almost entirely on sequels, reboots, and existing intellectual property to fill theaters, and the box office numbers have mostly backed up that strategy. Franchise fatigue has become a common talking point among industry analysts, yet original stories keep finding a way to punch above their weight.
That tension between IP dominance and genuine originality has made the rare original hit feel like a much bigger deal than it might have been a decade ago. When a movie with no built-in fan base manages to pull in hundreds of millions of dollars, it tends to become a story in itself rather than just another line on a box office chart.
With that in mind, the current list of Hollywood’s highest-grossing original films of the decade shows just how wide that range of success can be, spanning animation, horror, and big-budget science fiction alike. At the very top sits Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ which has earned 496 million dollars worldwide, cementing its status as a sleeper hit after a rocky opening weekend back in 2023.
Right behind it is ‘Obsession,’ the low budget horror sensation from director Curry Barker that has climbed to 403 million dollars globally. According to GamesRadar, the film cost roughly 750 thousand dollars to make, meaning its box office haul represents one of the most extreme return on investment stories of the decade.
Rounding out the top five are Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ with 389 million dollars, Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller ‘Sinners’ with 370 million dollars, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ with 365 million dollars. ‘Sinners’ previously held the record Obsession has now claimed, having itself dethroned ‘Tenet’ as the decade’s top original earner just a year earlier.
The rest of the list stretches across a broad mix of genres and studios. ‘Free Guy,’ the Ryan Reynolds video game comedy, comes in at 331 million dollars worldwide, while Illumination’s animated feature ‘Migration’ follows with 301 million dollars.
Zach Cregger’s horror thriller ‘Weapons’ sits at 270 million dollars, with Disney’s musical hit ‘Encanto’ just behind it at 261 million dollars. Closing out the top ten is Disney’s ‘Wish,’ which has earned 255 million dollars globally since its release.
What stands out across this list is how differently each of these films found its audience. ‘Elemental’ and ‘Hoppers’ both opened softly before turning into long haul successes through strong word of mouth, a pattern that has become something of a signature for Pixar’s more recent original releases. Pixar’s Elio, released in 2025, notably failed to replicate that trajectory and finished well below its budget, a reminder that the slow burn formula does not always work.
‘Obsession’ and ‘Sinners,’ meanwhile, represent something different entirely. Both films proved that horror, a genre often dismissed as a lower tier commercial bet, can outperform far more expensive tentpole releases when the concept and execution connect with audiences. ‘Sinners’ notably became the most Oscar nominated film in history with 16 nominations, while ‘Obsession’ has continued adding box office milestones on an almost weekly basis since its May release.
What’s the best Highest Grossing Original Films This Decade?
The presence of ‘Tenet’ on this list also serves as an unusual case study, given that its 365 million dollar haul came largely during the height of pandemic era theatrical uncertainty, when many markets were operating under reduced capacity or remained closed altogether. That context makes its position on the list arguably more impressive than the raw dollar figure suggests.
As more original films continue rolling out across the back half of the year, including Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic ‘The Odyssey,’ this list is far from finished taking shape. Which of these original hits do you think deserves the most credit for proving Hollywood should keep betting on new ideas? Let us know in the comments.
