There is little doubt that the movies, Hollywood movies specifically, have played a fundamental role in shaping much of our national identity. The only serious debate is how outsized that role has been.
Consider, for example, that the very idea of America as a pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps country, a land settled by bold men on an untamed frontier, has been seared into our collective consciousness by the Hollywood Western, which began to dominate movie screens in the 1930s.
