When it comes to drag royalty, Jujubee is front and center!

The Boston drag queen, reality TV personality, and recording artist blew up after starring in RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2. And even though she finished in third place, she had cemented herself into fans hearts (this writer included) because of her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. She was also funny, unapologetically herself, and genuinely looked like she was having a good time no matter what was going on in the werk room.

Years later and Jujubee is making her big screen debut in World of Wonder’s Stop! That! Train!. She plays DeeDee, a train hostess on the Glamazonian Express who must prevent disaster when a massive storm appears on the scene. And we get a Jujubee unlike any we’ve seen before. We’ve got romance, friendship woes, and even an action scene that sees Jujubee fighting for her life.

Fangirlish sat down with Jujubee to talk about Stop! That! Train! And we asked Jujubee about everything from entering her movie era, action sequences, her new music, and if she knew of the mention she gets in the Heated Rivarly: The Unauthorized Musical Parody. Maybe that’s a good place to start.

If you haven’t watched the Heated Rivarly: The Unauthorized Musical Parody [SPOILER ALERT] there’s a part in the musical where Ilya’s dad is told that his son is going to Boston. And then Ilya’s dad starts listing off things Boston is known for. And of course they have to mention Jujubee. So we wanted to know how Jujubee felt about being recognized by the Heated Rivalry musical as a Boston icon. Spoiler alert: she was delighted.

“First of all, I love hockey. I’ve been to the playoffs […] for the Stanley Cup. Those tickets were expensive. It was the Bruins against somebody from Canada. It’s always a Canadian and they always play so well,” Jujubee said before adding, “That feels really cool. It’s… to put Jujubee in Heated Rivalry the musical, is insane. I need my invite.”

On the Stop! That! Train! front, Jujubee is entering her movie era. Or at least she hopes to be considering this is her big screen debut and she did everything from action scenes to special effects and romance. In the movie Jujubee does her own stunts. And we wanted to know what was it like to be strapped in, in the air, and doing something new.

Going in, Jujubee didn’t know how this was going to happen. But she leaned into it. “I knew that I was going to be flying and lifted. I was in this harness system for seven hours. […] It was almost like I had like this weird corset thing on both my arms and then my center and then my legs. And they had to punch holes through my costume, my tights, the pads.”

Jujubee went on to say, “I think after the third hour, I could start feeling the pain because there was definitely rubbing happening. It started hurting, but it was a rush of adrenaline for me. I wanted to keep doing it. And I asked. I was like, can we do it again?”

But if she had the chance to do more movies, she’s absolutely there. “I would love to do more comedy, of course, but I also really want to dive into drama and something serious because we approached Stop! That! Train! by pretending like it was a drama so that we didn’t try to be funny.”

Movies isn’t the only thing that Jujubee is interested in. She’s also in her music era. On June 5th she released a new EP honoring her kitty cats. Jujubee told Fangirlish, “I decided that this was the perfect time to release more music. I’ve been working on these song for years, actually. And what I call this EP is Mess For You.”

Jujubee shared that when she started a new chapter after buying a house, her cat Mr. died four days later. “And that feeling of triumph and happiness for finally buying this place, I lost one of the loves of my life, you know? So like, this soul led me to this new chapter.” Her other cat Priss stayed with her for three more years before passing away this past January.

“But I’m so grateful that I got to spend over a decade with them. You know, I got 13 years with Mr. and 16 years with Priss. And I wanted to release Mess For You because they were in the spaces where I was writing and recording the songs,” Jujubee said about her new music, “And I felt like if they could talk to me, they’d be like, release it right now. And yeah Mess For You is a love story through the seasons. And I hope that everybody who listens to it can relate to it because there’s the happy love, there’s the love that you’re afraid of, there’s the love that you don’t want to be in, you know, that unrequited love. And lyrically, I think it’s pretty great.”

To wrap up this interview with the iconic Jujubee we wanted to reflect on how far she’s come. Because we remember that red wig from the first time we saw her on Drag Race. And we’ve been with her through multiple appearances on the show, Drag U, Dungeons and Drag Queens, multiple on stage musicals, hosting shows, and now Stop! That! Train! and new music. What she revealed was a little surprising: Jujubee almost quit drag.

“The only reason I auditioned [for Drag Race] is because my friends and drag mother told me maybe you should try out for this. Because I didn’t want to do drag anymore, you know, because it wasn’t… it wasn’t challenging or satisfying for me, like spiritually,” Jujubee explained. With perspective, she sees how Drag Race changed her outlook on what drag can be for somebody and her own talents. And she’s grateful for every step of this journey.

“I believe that everybody, especially queens, we’re so multifaceted. There’s so many different sides to our diamond, you know? And sometimes we start off really rough. But hten as we move towards a better version of ourselves, we start polishing up and getting shinier and shiner. And I’m just really proud that I’ve been afforded this life. And I hope that when I die and I come back, I hope I could remember just a sliver of this life because it’s a great one.”

With how talented of a queen Jujubee is, we have no doubt she’s just getting started when it comes to this life and legacy she’s created.

Stop That Train is now in theaters.
