(TNND) — Is Tilly Norwood the next Snow White?

Disney made Snow White the first hand-drawn feature-length leading lady nearly 90 years ago. Now, Particle 6, an artificial intelligence-powered content studio, is hoping to break similar ground with AI “actor” Tilly Norwood.

The studio announced this week that Tilly Norwood will star in a movie, “Misaligned,” that’s in early development and is described as a “comedy-drama telling a coming-of-age story infused with existential AI chaos.”

The studio said the “hybrid production” will be made with the help of traditional film and TV professionals working alongside AI specialists.

“AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgement and time,” Particle 6 CEO Eline van der Velden said in a news release. “That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point. The filmmakers who thrive in the next decade will be the ones who bring decades of storytelling instinct to these new tools, and Misaligned is where we put that to work at feature scale.”

But can Tilly Norwood or other AI creations be considered actors?

SAG-AFTRA, the labor union representing performers, said no last year when Tilly Norwood was reportedly seeking representation in Hollywood.

David Gunkel, the chair of the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University, drew a parallel with animation in his answer.

“So, it’s a really good question, because you could ask the same question of an animated character,” Gunkel said. “Is Mickey Mouse an actor? Is Woody an actor? Is Buzz Lightyear an actor? So, we’ve been always inventing characters in ways that span a range of artistic approaches. So, we can invent a character by having a human person play the role of a character, but we can also create a character by manipulating various technological objects, whether it be drawings or, in this case, computer graphics.”

AI “actor” Tilly Norwood is seen in an image provided Wednesday, July 8, 2026, by content studio Particle 6.

Whether Tilly Norwood has the charisma to keep audiences tuned in for a full-length film is “a question of scale,” Gunkel said.

“Can you scale up the experiments that have been done on the short form to a feature length? And I think you can,” he said.

In addition to animated characters, Gunkel said audiences are already used to “very compelling on-screen characters” made with computer graphics and mixed into live-action movies. Think Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings.”

“But now we’re just saying, ‘OK, maybe we don’t need the human actor in the green suit. Maybe there’s a way that we can use AI to automate the movement and sort of make the next step in this iteration.’ So, I think it will produce very similar kinds of results, and I think we’ll have to see whether or not audiences are willing to accept this when this film is released,” he said.

Gunkel said it’s smart positioning and marketing for Particle 6 to invite traditional filmmakers into the process amid the fears that AI threatens human artistry.

Plus, he said, the studio will need a lot of manpower and collaborators to get a movie off the ground, similar to how an “army of people” is needed “to make the animated feature that you see.”

“You don’t just sit down and prompt out a story,” he said.

Particle 6 said the movie will follow Tilly Norwood as “an AI being with no real body, no childhood and no lived experience of her own … only access to everyone else’s.”

“Things spiral when a seductive rogue bot from the dark web convinces her to abandon her guardrails and begin developing desires, impulses and ambitions of her own,” the film’s description continued. “The more terrifyingly human she becomes, the more famous she gets, and, significantly, Tilly begins to develop shame that her very being has been built on the whole of humanity.”

Gunkel said the studio made a “very clever decision” to lean into Tilly Norwood’s AI origin.

He said that story approach might help audiences connect the dots.

“Misaligned” is a big risk for Particle 6, Gunkel said.

It could be a one-off experiment, or it could open the door to more movies starring AI “actors.”

“If they put together a compelling narrative and a well-told filmic presentation of their idea, it will probably launch a number of other experiments in this direction,” Gunkel said. “If the execution is poor, and audiences don’t necessarily connect with it, you may see a longer lag time for this stuff to be actually operationalized in a way that studios and filmmakers feel confident with.”

Particle 6 hasn’t yet announced a release date for “Misaligned.”
