One of Los Angeles’s oldest and most storied restaurants, Musso & Frank Grill, has been Hollywood’s unofficial clubhouse — the dining room where industry folk, travelers, and martini-loving groups of friends have convened for steak, strong drinks, and gossip — since 1919. Even though it’s planted in a relentlessly touristy stretch of Hollywood Boulevard, the place still packs in locals year after year: stepping inside feels like cracking open a time capsule where the lighting is flattering, the spirit of old Hollywood lingers, and you momentarily question whether you can smoke indoors. As you cut into your prime rib, it feels plausible that Marilyn Monroe or Charlie Chaplin might materialize in the booth across from you.

A birthday where you want to wear the most expensive thing in your closet but your friends can show up in a ratty Van Halen shirt; celebrating a promotion with free-flowing alcohol and high-cholesterol foods (and maybe an ice cream sundae); showing your parents a cool side of Hollywood without scaring them; celebrity-spotting without enduring bouncers, lines, and influencers.

A little-known membership program called Club 1919 — once actual physical cards, now tied to your phone number — rewards you with periodic discounts after you hit certain spend thresholds. Ask your server for details if you plan on returning (or spending more than $500, which is very doable for groups of four or more).
