A new Jason Bourne movie suddenly feels within reach. Deadline pointed to a recent Parade interview with Matt Damon. In it, the actor admitted he would come back under one condition. The script has to be worth it. So the franchise is not dead after all. Fans have waited nearly ten years for that hint, and now they finally have it.
Matt Damon hasn’t ruled out another Bourne adventure
Picture Hollywood in 2002. Damon slipped into The Bourne Identity, and his career shifted overnight. People connected with the guy right away. He felt smart, wounded, and tough to shake. Audiences loved him. Before long, Damon signed on for The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Then came 2016 and Jason Bourne. Together, those movies grew into a franchise the studio could bank on.
Now Deadline says the hunger for more never really faded inside the core team. But there is a catch. They refuse to chase a sequel just for easy box office. Damon and his partners want a real reason to bring the spy back. Without a story that earns it, they would rather wait.
The Bourne movies changed the action genre
Spy movies used to mean gadgets and glossy bad guys. The Bourne Identity killed that formula in 2002. No tricks. Just brutal, close fights and a man chasing his own past. The impact was instant. Every action film suddenly craved that rough, handheld feel. The box office agreed. So far the franchise has cleared $1.6 billion worldwide. Critics loved it too, which almost never happens here.
The series even tried life without Damon. In 2012, The Bourne Legacy handed the lead to Jeremy Renner. Later, the show Treadstone poked around other corners of that world. Neither one stuck the same way. For most fans, Jason Bourne is still the name that counts.
Universal still controls the future of the franchise
Here is one more reason to stay hopeful. Back in 2025, NBCUniversal scooped up the rights to Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne and Treadstone properties. That gives the studio firm, lasting control of the brand. Frank Marshall, a producer attached since day one, is not going anywhere. He stays tied to whatever lands next. Representatives of the Ludlum estate remain in the room as well.
Even so, nothing here is locked. There is no director yet. The cast remains empty. A release date still does not exist. So far, nothing is confirmed. Still, Damon’s comments crack the door open again. Find the right story, and Jason Bourne could absolutely return.
