The biggest blockbusters of the late summer continue to rule the box office, with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” grossing $18 million this weekend in its sixth week in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
“The Odyssey” was second with $13 million Friday through Sunday in its eighth weekend in theaters, Rentrak reported.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” crossed the $2.4 billion mark in worldwide grosses and is now the third highest-grossing film of all time.
“The Odyssey” has grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.
“Coyote vs. Acme” was third with $11.3 million in its second weekend.
Fourth place went to the crime drama “By Any Means,” which opened with $7.4 million, followed by “Insidious: Out of the Further,” which grossed $6.5 million in its third weekend.
A 20th anniversary re-release of Pixar’s “Cars” claimed sixth place with $6.1 million.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Buddy” ($5.7 million), “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” ($3.3 million), “The End of Oak Street” ($2.9 million) and “The Dog Stars” ($2.7 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $90.4 million. The year-to-date total is $7.357 billion — up 20.4% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
