Sarandon spoke about her career struggle at the Venice Film Festival. She attended a press conference for her new film, The Echo Chamber. The actress said the alleged professional backlash has not ended. She claimed agencies still influence major studio hiring decisions, as reported by Metro.
“In terms of the power structure, I’ve still had movies taken away recently,” Sarandon said. “There are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still.” She added that the situation depends on whether a project involves a major studio.
Sarandon previously lost her UTA representation in 2023. The agency dropped her after controversial comments at a pro-Palestinian rally. She later apologized and called her remarks a “terrible mistake.”
The actress said some Hollywood figures have not changed their position. “I think there is, not just with me but with other people, who have been told that that is impossible,” she said. Sarandon also said she has found support outside Hollywood’s power structure.
“But I’ve found my family, I’ve found my people, and I’m okay,” she said. Her comments received a spontaneous 20-second burst of applause. Sarandon said she feels particularly welcomed internationally.
Sarandon also discussed how public attitudes toward Palestine have changed. She argued that Americans have gained more awareness about US support for Israel. She described this shift as a “major revelation for people.”
The actress now stars as Ava in The Echo Chamber. Andrea Pallaoro directed the film from Bernardo Bertolucci’s final screenplay. Alicia Vikander and Luca Marinelli also star in the movie.
Sarandon has continued working despite the alleged Hollywood barriers. She shifted toward independent European films and theater after losing UTA representation. She also found new representation in England and Italy. Her latest comments suggest the career consequences remain unresolved.
