The Walt Disney Studios reached a major milestone today as 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.  James Cameron continues to redefine commercial success; with this latest entry, the Avatar series becomes one of the rarest triple-threat franchises in history, with every installment having surpassed $1 billion.

This achievement marks the third Disney-led release to hit the billion-dollar ceiling in 2025, following the success of Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch, starring Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong, and Chris Sanders, which previously reached the billion-dollar mark, alongside the 2024 hits, Disney’s animated Inside Out 2 and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

The 2023 summer smash Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, propelled Greta Gerwig into the rankings as the second female director to break global and US Box Office Records. Director Jennifer Lee achieved this milestone for Disney’s Frozen II (2019,) co-directing alongside Chris Buck.
