Tom Hanks‘ forthcoming baseball film is ready to hit the ground running.
Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that it is set to release The Comebacker theatrically on July 30, 2027. Hanks stars in the movie that Marielle Heller helms from her own script, which adapts Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name.
The Comebacker stars Hanks as a pitching coach whose life is changed dramatically after he gets beaned in the head with a hit ball while standing at the mound.
Playtone and Leah Holzer produce the project in cooperation with Major League Baseball.
The Comebacker is set to hit theaters in late July, which falls just past the typical midway point of the MLB season as the pennant races continue heating up.
Hanks already has one classic baseball movie under his belt, as he starred alongside Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell in the beloved 1992 film A League of Their Own. Hanks portrayed manager Jimmy Dugan in director Penny Marshall’s 1940s-set ode to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
That film, which similarly hit theaters in July, features Hanks delivering the line, “There’s no crying in baseball.” It ranked No. 54 on AFI’s list of the best movie quotes.
Heller most recently directed Amy Adams in 2024’s Nightbitch. Her other directorial credits include The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, with the latter starring Hanks as the late Fred Rogers.
A two-time Oscar-winning performer, Hanks returned to voice Woody in the animated hit Toy Story 5 that is now in theaters. His recent features include The Phoenician Scheme and Here.
