The release of Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film, The Odyssey (2026), has brought attention to Argos, a Portuguese Podengo, one of Portugal’s oldest and most cherished native dog breeds.
The Podengo joins the cast of The Odyssey, introducing moviegoers worldwide to one of Europe’s oldest surviving hunting breeds and an enduring symbol of loyalty.
The faithful dog, portraying the loyal companion of Odysseus in Homer’s timeless epic, is a dog breed whose history stretches back thousands of years and whose enduring qualities of intelligence, resilience, and loyalty closely mirror those celebrated in the ancient poem.
After Odysseus returns home to Ithaca, following twenty years of war and wandering, the neglected old dog is the first living creature to recognize his master despite his disguise. Argos raises his head, wags his tail, and, having fulfilled his final act of loyalty, peacefully dies. In one of the most moving scenes in Homer’s epic, Argos’ loyalty is remembered as one of the most poignant symbols of devotion in world literature.
According to canine historians, the Podengo’s ancestors likely arrived on the Iberian Peninsula with Phoenician and Mediterranean traders more than 2,000 years ago. Over centuries, the breed adapted to Portugal’s varied landscapes, becoming an exceptional hunting dog prized for its speed, endurance, keen senses, and close partnership with humans.

About the Portuguese Podengo
The Portuguese Podengo is one of Portugal’s oldest and most distinctive native dog breeds, with origins believed to date back more than 2,000 years. Historians believe the breed descended from primitive hunting dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Phoenician and other Mediterranean traders, where it evolved into a uniquely Portuguese breed.
Officially recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the Portuguese Podengo is found in three sizes—Grande (Large), Médio (Medium), and Pequeno (Small)—and in both smooth-haired and wire-haired varieties. Each size was traditionally used for different types of hunting, from pursuing deer and wild boar to flushing rabbits from dense undergrowth.
Known for exceptional intelligence, agility, endurance, and alertness, Podengos hunt using a combination of sight, scent, and hearing. They are highly adaptable and affectionate, possessing an independent spirit developed through centuries of working in Portugal’s rugged mountains and countryside.
