“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has become Hollywood’s first $1 billion box office blockbuster of 2026, news outlets report.
The animated feature film, released April 1, has earned $438.5 million domestically and $571.5 million internationally on a $110 million production budget — making big winners of production companies Universal Pictures and Illumination and video-game maker Nintendo.
The movie’s box office run is winding down, and it’s unlikely to reach further milestones.
The film is a sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in 2023, which earned $1.36 billion worldwide, one of the highest-grossing animated films ever. It features the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day from the original movie and adds those of Brie Larson, Donald Glover and Glenn Powell.
Given the sequel’s strong box office performance, a Donkey Kong spin-off and other projects are being discussed, news outlets report.
2026 is on pace to be one of the biggest box office years, with upcoming films such as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “Toy Story 5” and “Avengers: Doomsday” expected to hit the billion-dollar mark.
