This weekend, L.A. Philharmonic brings Wes Anderson’s 30-year filmography and his entire musical universe to life across three nights at the Hollywood Bowl
Most people are familiar with the aesthetic: a colorful, pleasantly eccentric, symmetrical world of Wes Anderson, but fans of the director can experience it this weekend.
After years of trying to make it happen, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Anderson are teaming up for three unforgettable nights celebrating the director’s 30-year filmography. The music from across the many films of Anderson will be in concert at the Hollywood Bowl July 10 through July 12, with tickets available online.
The concert, hosted by Bill Murray alongside other special guests, will showcase performances from Anderson’s closest musical collaborators, a selection of clips from his most popular films including The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and more, to create an immersive concert experience.
“His soundtracks and his movie music selections are so iconic, it’s almost just like a sampling of it all,” Vice President of Programming and Creative Partnerships of L.A. Philharmonic Johanna Rees said in regard to the collaboration.
“He’s really been the architect of the shows. He has a distinct vision, of course, so we’ve been following his lead and putting it together with his guidance,” Rees added. “You’re watching the films, but you’re also taken on this journey through the music and through the sound.”
The music of Anderson’s films comes from various decades and genres, but the concert series beautifully ties them together in one place for the first time ever. From songs by the Kinks and the Rolling Stones to distinctive scores by Mark Mothersbaugh and Alexandre Desplat, Anderson’s films have a unique sound that instantly enthralls you in the world of Anderson.
Conductor Thomas Wilkins commands the full orchestra, two choirs, a house band, various soloists, as well as a banjo player and even a whistler to bring Anderson’s film to life. Musicians and actors including Beck, Jenny Lewis, Jackson Browne, Jason Schwartzman and Mothersbaugh himself will perform fan-favorite songs, scores and classical selections from Anderson’s filmography.

Jim James, one of the vocalists for the concerts, is a huge fan of all the films and music of Anderson and will be singing a few songs at the event. Even though he knows the songs well, he hasn’t had the chance to play them before, so he’s enjoyed entering the world of the song through this experience.
“I just try to let the music speak through me, and the really beautiful thing about music is that it exists outside of all of us,” James said. “It’s like a really cool chance for me to step outside of myself and be an instrument for somebody else’s spirit to come through.”
As the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl transform into a wonderland of Anderson’s works, themed displays, character-inspired treats, limited-edition merch and The Criterion Mobile Closet are open for fans to explore. Audiences can also take a look at The Criterion Cinema, which will be showing screenings of films personally selected by the director himself.
So bust out your Tenenbaum furs and eyeliner, grab your Mendl’s desserts and prepare for the sights and sounds of one of cinema’s most visionary directors. The concert is a little different each night, so you’ll be surprised no matter what version of Anderson’s surreal world you step into.
